How many times you shared your personal information and location information to your friends unknowingly? One of the easiest ways your data gets leaked from your iPhone is by installing apps that share your information in social circle.

To get through this problem, we now have a new app in Cydia that can protect your privacy. ‘Protect My Privacy’ app protects your privacy by alerting you when an app attempts to share your private data and location information. You can then choose to ‘Allow’ or ‘Protect’ depending upon your preference.

So what is the situation when some apps need your private or location information to work? Don’t worry, when you select ‘Protect’, the app will send fake replacement information such as random names or location specified by you.

The current version of the app only supports protection of your location, Identity, and Contacts in the Address Book. The developer promises that the future versions will protect even more information types.

After installation of the app, you will see a new icon ‘PMP’ in the Home screen. Launch it and then you will find the list of Protected Apps and Unprotected Apps. The list will initially be empty- apps will get listed after the alert is shown. Tap ‘Settings’ > ‘Identifier’. This is the unique identifier that your apps will use.

Go back to Settings > tap on ‘Location’ and select preferred location which you want to use for your location data. This will be the location that the app will send as your location.

There is one more cool way to access the Protected and Unprotected apps right from Notification Center. To do this, go to Home page > Settings > Notifications and scroll down to bottom showing ‘Not in Notification Center’. Tap on ‘ProtectMyPrivacy’ and turn on the Notification Center.

You will now see Protect My Privacy in the Notification Center. Initially the list is empty-things will get added with time depending upon number of app alerts.

The one that looked like it came straight off an old Mac Plus computer? Well it’s now available in Cydia for your downloading pleasure.

Conceptualized by designer Anton Repponen, and created by an author named AR7, iOS ’86 gives your new school device, an old school feel. And here’s how you can install it on your jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch…

The theme isn’t available in the default repos, and doesn’t come with its own wallpaper. So we’ve put together this quick tutorial to make sure your iOS device is looking right.

Step 1. Open Cydia, and add http://repo.ithemes.it to your list of sources (you’ll notice that Cydia warns you that the repo has been reported for redistributing copyrighted works. iDB doesn’t normally recommend installing these kinds of repos, but this was the only place we could find the theme).

Step 2. Once the repo is installed, do a search in Cydia for ‘iOS 86′ and install it.

Step 3. Now you’ll need to activate the theme in Winterboard (If you don’t have it, you’ll need to install it), and re-spring your device.

Step 4. And finally, it’s not mandatory, but we recommend you download and apply this white wallpaper to complete the look.

That’s all there is to it! It’s worth noting that the theme isn’t very extensive. It doesn’t seem to support many (if any) icons outside of the native set, and it doesn’t change the look of any other UI elements.

But we have to admit, it still looks good. Here’s hoping that its creator plans to add new icons and other elements in the future.

What do you think of iOS ’86?

WinterBoard, the jailbreak application that allows you to customize virtually every design aspect of your iPhone, has been updated with support for iOS 5.

After a week or so of beta testing, saurik has finally worked out all the kinks and made sure that WinterBoard is fully compatible and stable when running on iOS 5…

Because it is updated for iOS 5, it doesn’t mean that all themes will work. Themes also have to be updated to work properly on iOS 5. So if you have a theme that’s not working right, it’s probably not because of WinterBoard, but because of the theme itself.

You can easily update WinterBoard directly from Cydia. You know the drill.

How is this updated version of WinterBoard working for you?

Summary:- Run Flash websites, access webmail and read PDFs on your iPad with OnLive’s Desktop Plus cloud-based service.

After bringing Windows 7 and Office applications to the iPad via its Desktop App during CES last month, OnLive is already adding Adobe Flash Player, Reader and full-featured Internet Explorer to its cloud-based offering for a new paid tier of service, OnLive Desktop Plus.

OnLive Desktop:-

Love it or hate it, Adobe Flash is still widely used on the Internet — for games, annoying ads, videos, multimedia websites, to name a few — so the lack of Flash support on iOS devices is a major reason some consumers avoid the iPad. But what if there is a way to add Flash functionality to the iPad without bogging down its performance or having to purchase an iPad-wannabe? OnLive is betting that users would be willing to pay $4.99 a month for that privilege with OnLive Desktop Plus. Not only will these paying customers be able to use cloud-based Windows 7 and Office applications like Word and Excel plus get 2GB of cloud storage (already available to free users), they will also be able to access their webmail accounts (Yahoo Mail, Outlook) and file storage sites like Dropbox with Internet Explorer; get priority access to the OnLive pipes for file uploads/downloads at “gigabit-speed”; as well as turn their iPads into Flash-playing and PDF-reading machines.

Non-paying users on the OnLive Desktop Standard service will be getting Adobe Reader rather than Flash, on top of access to the usual lineup of Windows 7 applications and 2 GB of storage on Onlive’s servers. While company will be prioritizing server traffic for its paying customers, its “patented instant-action cloud gaming technology” means it should be able to provide a latency-free experience to remotely served software. Of course, actual experience will depend on the server load at the time of use and physical proximity to OnLive’s servers. James Kendrick over at Mobile News is already reporting blazingly fast speeds in his test of the newly launched service.

(All users need to download and install the free Onlive Desktop app via iTunes, and signup for an OnLive Desktop account on its website to access the cloud-based software and storage.)

Android users will have to wait some more for the Onlive Desktop service and app to come to their devices, which the company promises will happen some time this year. Considering the fact most Android tablets already support Flash out-of-box, OnLive Desktop Plus won’t be as much of a draw for its Flash Player as it offers a backdoor way to have the best of both the Windows and Android worlds without the mess of dual-booting OSes. With Windows 8 literally on the horizon (preview is next week), IMHO the OnLive Desktop provides an easy “tweener” solution for those who need Windows functionality on their Android or iPad now but are really biding their time until a true Windows 8 tablet lands.

What do you think?

Today we’re taking a look at one the most practical iPhone accessories you could ever own, if you drive a car that is. Proclip is a company that specializes in mounting systems for your devices and the best part is that they’re car specific, meaning you get a perfect fit – every time! As far as Apple devices go, they have mounts for every iPhone, iPad and iPod out there, as well as a massive vehicle database to pick from.

Proclip was kind enough to send over a mounting system to use in my Civic Si. Now I’ve seen and even used several different car mounts in the past but none even comes close to Proclip. There are a couple key elements in a vehicle mounts. One of the most critical things is how secure the mount is. Nobody wants their iDevice going for a ride when the brakes get tapped just a bit too hard! Location of the mount in the car is also another critical aspect.

The Proclip mount involves two pieces. The first is the car specific mount. Each vehicle has several location options to choose from. Typically they mount to an air vent near the steering wheel or somewhere on the center console. The best part about the mount being car-specific is that you don’t have to mess with adhesives that just don’t stick or suction cups that keep coming off the window – I’ve been there, it’s not fun.

The vehicle mount is designed to – wouldn’t you know it- clip on to your dash. The mount I received clips on to the top seam in the dashboard and onto the top of the vent. Proclip even supplies a couple of small wedges to pry up the trim on your dashboard just enough to sneak the mount in. I’ve got to say that the fit is absolutely perfect! It required a decent amount of pressure to snap in, and once in, it’s rock solid. Proclip even ads a couple of small 3M adhesive strips to make extra sure it won’t move.

The second part of the mount is specific to the device. Here again, there are a variety of options for iPhone holders, depending on whether you use a case or have a naked device. There are also options for tilt, swivel, cigarette charger connecting cable and even a rear clip for that extra support while off-roading. As you can see in the picture though, it is easy to tilt into landscape mode and there is more than enough support for that during normal, everyday driving.

The device mount can be mated to the car mount securely with several small screws, provided by Proclip. The fitment of the iPhone in the holder is also superb. It slides in to the mount and feels very firmly held. It also is padded which I couldn’t be more pleased about while using my iPhone without a case.

Between the options to mount in multiple locations, rock solid security, and outstanding fit, it hasn’t taken much time and already, I’ve fallen in love with this mount. Perhaps the only bad thing I could say about this is that if you connect your iPhone to your car stereo via an AUX in or USB cable, you might have to run it up your dash, however, it’s a small price to pay for having your phone in your field of view while driving, and complying with hands-free regulations as well!

The vehicle mount goes for around $30 while the device mounts can set you back anywhere between $25-130 depending on which device and extras you want on the mount. Needless to say, the degree of customization is staggering. If you want a mount that you will not be disappointed in, you can purchase a mounting system on the Proclip website.

Twook is a handy social networking manager that can be used to post statuses, pictures, and links on multiple social networking sites. It’s a manager, not an integrator – this means that you cannot use twook as a medium for mass-posting on every site at once, however you can use it as a single application instead of needing to have an application installed for each social networking site. With the way that twook is handled, you can mass-post a message, however you will have to tap on the post button for each site to get your message up on every social networking site – on the bright side, you won’t need to re-type the message over and over to get it on each social networking site. The developer shares with us that a post-to-all function is in the works.

The recent update for twook (4.0) has brought a feature to the social networking manager application realm that has been massively demanded – the capability to see your feeds from within the manager itself. This is a feature that What’s Going Down?, which we reviewed earlier fails to provide.

Twook supports Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr for posting statuses and pictures. It also supports Read it Later, Google Reader, Instapaper, and Pinboard for sharing URL’s with people. This is especially useful if you want to bookmark something online to read it later.

The user interface of twook is tremendously clean – there is no clutter, excellent use of white space, and great design concept involved in it. Heck, it even has a beautiful icon that looks great on retina displays. The simplicity of navigating through the application gives it that zing that all good applications have. What’s more is that the functionality of twook is extensive, but thanks to the great design, you would think it did less.

The spotlight of version 4.0 of twook has to do with being able to see your social networking feeds. The feeds all look native – just as you would expect them to look in the social networking applications themselves. This includes the composition and notification buttons. There is no bulky look to them; no custom appearances. It just looks right. This gives twook some awesome morale in this department.

Twook is an excellently designed social networking manager, which has obviously had a lot of thought put into its development. Normally, it would set you back 99¢ to grab a copy of twook, however if you want to snag a copy for free then you can take part in our giveaway. The developer behind twook just so happens to be the renowned jailbreak developer coffeejay and he has offered to let us give away some copies.

While social networking can be a very large part of our lives these days, they can be very equally frustrating. If you post something on Twitter, it doesn’t go to Facebook. If you post something on Facebook, it doesn’t go to Instagram. It you post something to Tumblr, it doesn’t go to some other social networking site. Granted, Twitter and some other social networking places have settings to post to some other sites, wouldn’t it be great if you could use one application to post to all of your social networking sites at once?

A new free App Store application dubbed What’s Going Down? will let you do that. Pictured above, is the application – it’s attractive in appearance; it has some qualities of Tweetbot with that sleek dark gray appearance and the blue colors blended into it. The application has a few different themes that you can pick from, but I find the default one shown above is the nicest looking of them all. There is also a theme that appears similarly to the Apple Notes application and another theme with a cloudy/sky look to it.

What’s Going Down? supports Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Foursquare, and Instagram integration. While the average person might only have two or three of these social networks on their iDevice, this application does an outstanding job of connecting these social networks all in one place. Signing into all of those social networks from this application is simple, and it remembers your login information so you don’t have to sign in later on, which is a brilliant feature.

There are settings to regulate image quality for those of you who are data-watchers who try to never go over your data caps, there are URL shorteners, and there is a ‘now-playing’ feature that lets you share what music you are listening to on your iDevice. You can share photographs, videos, music information, location, and more. There is even an option to use the camera while you’re typing so you can see what’s ahead of you while you’re walking and texting – pretty nifty!

The coolest feature is probably the built-in Instagram-like functionality that permits you to put frames and photograph filters over your photographs before you share them to all of your social networks. The interface is easy to use; simply swipe left and right and tap on the effects that you want to use.

While I personally appreciate using all of the different social networking applications on my iPhone, I think that the What’s Going Down? application might help some people manage their time better by helping them to kill two (or dare I say – five) birds with one stone and posting their lives to more than one social network with the tap of a button. The interface is also a pleasure to use. It’s free so give it a shot and feel free to tell us what you think about it.

One thing about iOS notifications that really peeves many is when getting notifications from a variety of applications, many of them make the same alerting noise – the iOS tri-tone. The sounds that you can choose to use with iOS notifications are limited only to system applications such as Messages, Phone, and some others – third party applications cannot be customized. This can make it very problematic trying to discern between which application is trying to give you an alert when you are far away from your iDevice. iOS developer yeahwangy has come up with a great jailbreak tweak to solve that problem.

Dubbed PushTone, the jailbreak tweak will make it achievable to assign each application in your Notification settings with a different kind of sound. You can use any of your iDevice’s ring tones or alert tones you want in order to be notified. When you go into an application in your Notification settings, you’ll see a new option at the bottom of it all (shown above) labeled PushTone. By default, the tone is set to none – none simply means that it will use the default sound; it doesn’t mean that it won’t make a sound at all (unless you have sounds disabled – then it won’t make any sounds at all).

Since you can use any of your ring tones or alert tones to inform you of a specific application notification, there is no chance of you running out of tones to use. You can use any of your custom ring tones that you have downloaded from iTunes or that you have synced to your iDevice through iTunes, which you downloaded or made yourself.

Giving PushTone a test run for ourselves, we’ve found that it makes it very easy to tell between a Twitter notification and a Facebook notification even when you’re across the room from your iDevice. It also works great with other applications, however PushTone is only compatible with applications actually supporting sounds. I’ve also noticed a rather long lag session when trying to open an application’s notification settings probably due to loading the sound library each time. This lag can be excruciating for anyone that is impatient and might be the deal-breaker of buying this tweak or not. Overall, I find the ability to use any sound with any application very useful.

Introducing WeeRoll – a newfangled jailbreak tweak designed by iOS developer PathKiller29. WeeRoll makes your iDevice capable of displaying different kinds of animations when you pull Notification Center down from the status bar (iOS 5-only). The animations vary from one that we’ve seen in Ori Kadosh’s Flowtation jailbreak tweak to twelve other ones that we have not yet seen. WeeRoll ultimately feels like Barrel for Notification Center in that the animations are only invoked when you swipe.

WeeRoll has a very easy-to-use preferences interface involving an enable/disable switch to easily alternate between the iOS default animation or your custom ones and a place where you can pick the animation to display when you launch Notification Center. The thirteen animations you can use when opening Notification Center are as follows:

Window Switch

Pull Down

Spiral

Stomp

Squish

Inner Cube

Outer Cube

Minimize

Bounce

Width Stretch

Height Stretch

Zoom and Fade

Squish Alternative

As we would expect from a GPU (graphics processing unit)-intensive jailbreak tweak, there is negligible lagging with some of the animations. The lagging is less perceptible on newer devices, however older ones will be a little uncooperative and have dropped frames. Below we have included a video demonstration of WeeRoll on an iPod touch 4G and you can tell right off the bat that there is minor lagging with some animations:

While the lagging doesn’t render the iDevice unusable by any means, some of the animations are better than others in render speeds. Some of my personal favorites comprise of Spiral, Zoom and Fade, and Minimize. They seem to be the ones that stand out the most to me because of their creativity and because they make my iPhone act in a way Apple would never have planned on implementing. The only way you could like WeeRoll is if you are the kind of person constantly looking for ways to make the iDevice awesome in ways that Apple never lets you do – if you are that kind of person, then I highly recommend it.

If you are skeptical of buying WeeRoll, you can try the free version which has been out for a little while longer dubbed WeeRoll Lite.

As MMi addressed earlier today, current reports peg the iPad 3 debut for March 7th at a soon-to-be announced Apple media event in San Francisco. Although the iPad will debut in North America before it hops across the pond to stir up another sales frenzy in Europe, Apple fans in Germany may not have to wait much longer than their American counterparts to gain access to the third generation tablet.

German-language tech news site iFun.de reported today that sources in the know have alluded to a March 23rd release date for the iPad 3 in Germany. This revelation flies in the face of an earlier report saying that Germans would have to wait until early April to get the iPad 3.

Although the exact date proposed by the German site may ultimately prove incorrect by a few days, no one will be surprised to see the European rollout closely follow the iPad 3′s North American debut. Last year after the iPad 2 was unveiled, the device began its march around the globe just two weeks later.

Industry analysts and market watchers say the iPad will arrive next month and feature such new attributes as Siri voice control, a dual-core “A5X” processor, and a 1080p camera with image stabilization among other revamped features.
